does the greedy book cost anything to use?

absolutely not! the greedy book is a totally free, marvellous service that is dedicated to making the gift-giving process a walk in the park.

can i buy directly from the greedy book?

no, the greedy book is not an online store and doesn’t sell products directly. we’re a treasure trove where people can store and share all their greediest desires from all over the web. the items you see on the greedy book are all sold separately by individual retailers, and your purchase is made directly from them through their website. each one of these retailers will have their own terms and conditions and privacy policy, all questions relating to products, orders, availability, pricing, charges, delivery or returns should be directed to the retailer in question. to visit the retailers website just click ‘view now’ at the bottom of an image.

how do i become a member of the greedy book?

very simple my friend, just click here to fill out our super quick registration form. enter your details and once you’ve received your confirmation email just click on the link to confirm. make sure to check your junk and spam folders in case its there. then you’re ready to go!

make sure you install the bookmark when you log in if you haven’t done it in registration, you’ll need it to add things to your greedy books.

i can't find my account activation email

don’t worry, this is an easy one to fix. it’s most probably in your junk or spam mail folder, some email providers – particularly hotmail – are a bit suspicious of a new kid on the block so put emails in there for safe keeping. add us to your address book to stop this happening again.

if its not there, you can resend the activation email by revisiting our website and trying to log in. because your account won’t have been activated you will get an alert asking if you’d like it to re-sent.

what is the greedy bookmark button?

the greedy bookmark is an ingenious little button which lets you adds items from any online store into your chosen greedy books.

just click on the ‘my greedy account’ drop-down bar in the top right-hand corner of any page on the site and select ‘install the greedy bookmark’, follow the instructions and it will appear on your browser ready for action.

when you find something you fancy on an online store, you just click on the bookmark button to add the item directly to your greedy book. you have to fill some of the item’s details, (name, price and rating are mandatory), press ‘add’, and as if my magic the item will be carefully stored away with all your other greedy desires.

remember to wait for the success message when adding items, otherwise they won’t have transferred into your greedy book.

ah, wonderful, you’re about to change your life for the better with this marvelous little button! first things first, you need to click on the ‘install greedy bookmark’ link in the ‘my greedy account’ drop-down bar in the top right-hand corner of every page in the site.

no matter what browser you’re using our clever website works out which one it is, and gives you the right instructions to install the bookmark in a jiffy. once installed, it will appear at the top of your browser in the bookmark bar, how handy! now, just go to your favorite online stores, find an item you love, and click the bookmark button to add it to your greedy book.

is it safe to use the greedy bookmark?

absolutely, it’s completely safe to use. not only that, the bookmark doesn’t access any of your personal information, it’s simply a way to add an item you like from a retailers website to your greedy book.

# creating, adding to and editing your greedy books

how do i create a greedy book?

wonderful, you’re about to make the first step to getting all the things you’ve dreamed of unwrapping. you create a greedy book as follows:

#1 log in or become a member if you’re not already.

#2 you’ll come to the homepage where you can click on ‘create a greedy book’ (it’s on the far left!)

#3 this will generate a pop up where you need to fill in some information in order to create a greedy book.

name: simple, call it whatever you like, remember that it will already say your first name when people search for it. so if i were to fill in this field ‘birthday’ it would read ‘charlie’s birthday greedy book’.

expiry date: would you like your greedy book to go on forever, or would you prefer it expires on a certain date? once it’s expired it will disappear from your greedy library, you can still access it by clicking on ‘view expired books’, you can also add unbought items to another greedy book, but no one else can purchase from it. the default setting no expiry date, but just untick this box and pop one in if you prefer.

privacy: would you like everyone to be able to see your book, or would you prefer it to be private? if it’s public people can just search for your name and view your greedy book, if it’s private they need to request your permission to view. the default setting is public, but you can select private here. If someone requests to see your book you can approve or deny them in ‘my notifications’ in the ‘my greedy account’ drop down.

finally, you can choose whether you’d like to create a greedy book for someone else within your account. maybe a child who’s too young to make their own, or a dog who’s not that tech savvy. then those lovely gift givers can search for your name and view your, as well as their, greedy book in your library. it works in exactly the same way, you just need to click on ‘create a book for someone else’ and follow the instructions.

how do i add items to a greedy book from an online store?

easy. first things first make sure you have downloaded the greedy bookmark button. you can do this by clicking on the ‘my greedy account’ drop down menu on the top right corner of every page on the website, then selecting ‘install greedy bookmark’.

just follow the installation instructions there, and if you’re still stuck click here to view a tutorial video. sometimes internet explorer in particular can be a bit tricky.

once it’s successfully installed, visit your favourite online stores, find an item you want and press the bookmark button on your browser. you have to fill in some details (the item name, price, rating and what greedy book you want to put it in are mandatory), then just press add. remember to wait to see the success message before you close the bookmark, it hasn’t added if it doesn’t say ‘hurrah! your item has been successfully added!’

how do i add items to my greedy book that i've seen in another person's greedy book, or in the inspirations section?

not a problem. if you’ve seen an item you like on someone else’s greedy book, and you’d like to add it to yours, just click on the ‘add to a greedy book’ button on the left hand side of the item page of their greedy book. this will generate a pop up where you need to choose what greedy book to put it in, and add a rating. you can also add a description and alter the price.

it works in exactly the same way if you want to add something from the inspirations section. just click onto the item page in our favourites, the search, random greedy books or within greedy heroes and click ‘add to a greedy book’.

can i change the image of an item i'm adding?

this depends on the retailer you’ve added the item from. some will supply lots of images for you to choose from, you can browse through them on the bookmark using the arrows under the image. however, some retailers only give you one image, and some don’t make their images available so you might not be able to add an image at all (if this happens to you click here to let us know about it and we’ll contact the retailer).

if you’ve already added the item to your greedy book we’re afraid the image is set, the only way of changing it would be to delete and then re-add the item choosing a different image in the bookmark.

i want to add an item, why is there no image available?

most of the time the greedy bookmark will happily identify the correct product image, or offer a selection you can choose from. but there are some sites which are built a bit unusually and don’t make their images available. where this is the case we’ve given you an image of an ‘egg’ instead, random we know, but also rather intriguing?! click here to let us know if you find a site where this happens, and we’ll do our best to get it sorted quickly.

what if i want to add more than one of the same item?

sometimes you might need more than one of something, at the moment the best way to do this is to add it multiple times to your greedy book. so let’s say you’d like 6 glasses, you need to add the glass 6 times to your greedy book. this will mean friends don’t have to buy you the whole set, they can just buy you what they can afford leaving the rest for some other generous gift buyer.

why do i have to rate the items i add to my greedy book?

when you add an item to a greedy book with the greedy bookmark or from the inspirations section, you’ll be asked to give it a rating. this is super useful for people who want to buy you a present as they can see what you want the most. give it 1 star if you’re just feeling a bit peckish for it, or up to 5 stars if you’re double chocolate cake desperate for it!

how many greedy books can i have?

as many as you like! your greedy library is there to be filled, the more the merrier. put in birthday books, Christmas books, wedding books, pay day books…or even the odd ‘just because’ book!

can i edit the title of a greedy book?

absolutely. just click on the ‘settings’ button on the front cover of the book you want to edit, you can change all the settings there. easy as pie!

can i edit the title of an item within a greedy book once i've added it?

absolutely, all you need to do is click on the ‘edit’ button directly underneath the image of the item you’d like to change. this will allow you to change any of the details – the name, description, price and rating. however if the item has been purchased for you already you can’t change any of the details.

can i delete a greedy book?

yes indeedy, you just click on the ‘delete’ button on the cover of the greedy book you want to get rid of.

can i delete an item from my greedy book?

absolutely. if you feel an item isn’t right, just click ‘delete’ under the image in your book.

can i put an expiry date on my greedy book?

though there will be many wonderful greedy books you’ll want to last forever, you may want to put an expiry date on others. when you make a greedy book the default setting is to have no expiry date on it, but you can easily change this by clicking ‘settings’ on the book cover, and then setting the date.

can i view an expired book?

you can indeed, we wouldn’t want you to lose anything special! in your greedy library you have the option to ‘show your expired books’, or hide them. it’s up to you. you can even move un-bought items to a new greedy book.

can i change the expiry date on a greedy book?

no problem, just click on ‘settings’ on the front of the greedy book you’d like to edit. here you’ll be able to change the name of the greedy book, re-set or remove the expiry date and make the book public, or private.

can i make a greedy book private?

how do i buy something?

time for a treat? to buy something from your own, or someone else’s greedy book, just click the ‘view now’ button. this will take you to the retailers website where you can get more details and buy the item. they will arrange the fulfillment and delivery. remember to let us know if you’ve bought it by coming back to the greedy book and answering the question in the automatic pop up, it stops them getting the item more than once.

how do i track a delivery, make a return or query a price for an item in a greedy book?

the greedy book isn’t an online store and doesn’t sell products directly. the items you see on the greedy book are all sold separately by individual retailers, and your purchase is made directly from them on their website. each one of these retailers will have their own terms and conditions and privacy policy. so you should ask the individual retailer any questions about products, orders, availability, pricing, charges, delivery or returns. to find the retailer just click on ‘view now’ beneath the item image and it will take you to the retailer’s website.

can i compare prices through the greedy book?

sadly you can’t price compare through the website at the moment but you can when using the iPhone app. just scan the barcode of an item you want, and if its available online you’ll be able to choose the best price and add it directly to your greedy book.

can i contribute to the total cost of an item, but not pay it all myself?

interesting question. at the moment the best way to do this is to click on the button saying ‘split with friends’. this generates an email from the site which you can send to your friends, encouraging them to chip in and help you out! just remember to separate the email addresses with a comma. keep your eyes peeled though, we’re developing this area of the site and soon you’ll be able to pay just part of the cost of an item.

someone's bought an item off my greedy book, why hasn't it disappeared?

ah, good question. it’s not actually meant to disappear. when someone buys something from a greedy book it gets ‘greyed out’ in the guest view, this means that anyone else viewing your greedy book won’t be able to buy it, and you won’t get it twice.

we don’t want to ruin the surprise of what you’re going to get, so when you look at your own greedy books, all the items will appear as normal, even if they’ve been bought for you. if you try and buy an item yourself that has already been bought, then we’ll tell you not to, after all we don’t want you to buy something you’re already getting!

if i buy an item from someone's book will they be able to see it's been bought and from me?

we don’t want to ruin the surprise of what they’re going to get, so when they look at their own greedy books, all the items will appear as normal, even if they’ve been bought. if they try and buy an item themselves that has already been bought, then we’ll tell them not to, after all we don’t want them to buy something they’re already getting!

having said that, we may be greedy but we’re also polite. we want our members to be able to say thank you for all their lovely presents, so we do allow them to request a list of what they’ve been bought by who. hopefully they won’t cheat and do that before the big event!

I've said I bought an item by mistake, how can I unreserve it?

tricky, i’m afraid at the moment the only thing to do in this situation is to delete the item that has been wrongly reserved and add it again. you’ll need to contact the person who’s greedy book it is to do it. we are changing this as quickly as possible.

I'm trying to buy an item but its out of stock, or not available in their size, what should I do?

damn and blast! that’s super annoying. unfortunately because we don’t sell any of these items directly there’s nothing we can do about it. we’d recommend you do the following:

#1 check with the retailer to see when they’re getting the item back in stock.

#2 see if it’s available anywhere else. sometimes items are available on more than one website, it doesn’t really matter where you get it from if it’s the same! make sure you say you’ve bought it on their greedy book even if you buy it from somewhere else, you don’t want it being bought for them twice!

#3 if #1 and #2 don’t work then tell the person who’s greedy book it is so they can add something else!

i've clicked on the 'view now' button but the link to the retailer doesn't work.

oh dear, so sorry about that. sometimes retailers change where things live on their site, or delete them completely and that means links that once worked no longer will.

the best thing to do is to find and add the item again if it’s your own greedy book, if you’re looking at someone else’s greedy book then let them know it doesn’t work so they can re-add or find something else they like.

can i buy more than one item from someone's greedy book from the same retailer without having to check out twice on their site?

another great question! yes you can, the best thing to do is to click through and add the first thing you want to purchase to your basket. then go back to the greedy book and press ‘view now’ on the other item you’d like to buy from the same retailer. when you arrive at their site you’ll notice that the first item you’d added to your basket is there waiting for you and you can just add the next one there and then. you can do this as many times as you need. anything you add to the basket will always be there as long as you do it within 30 mins or so.

# receiving gifts

can I find out who has bought me what?

keen to thank your generous gift-givers? its very simple, you just click on the ‘receive a list of generous buyers’ link on the front of your book. if this link isn’t there it’s because sadly no one has bought anything from your book just yet.

don’t worry just share your greedy books to make sure they do!

how can i be sure that i won't get the same item twice?

good point, no one wants three of the same hat for Christmas. when someone views an item from your greedy book, we’ll ask them if they bought it for you. if they did, the item will be ‘greyed out’, which means people who view your book won’t be able to buy it again. problem solved! however, when you look at your own greedy book all bought items will still be there, we don’t want to spoil the surprise!

# sharing and viewing a greedy book

how can i find someone's greedy book?

easy! you just type their name into the ‘search users’ field in the top right of the page, and you’ll be taken to their list of greedy books. if you’re having problems finding them perhaps just put their first or last name in to widen the search.

if you can’t see some of their books there, click on the ‘plus’ sign to expand the list.

if you can’t access a greedy book for one of your friends, it probably means they’ve made it private. if you want to see it click ‘request to view’, and they’ll get a notification with your request and will have to approve it.

how do i share my greedy books?

all you need to do is click the ‘share’ button on the front cover of your books, and you can share all your heart desires via email, facebook or twitter.

if you are sharing the book by email, to more than one person, then make sure you separate the email addresses with a comma.

if the book you are sharing is private, your friends will have to request to view it. you’ll get an email letting you know they want to take a look which you’ll need to approve.

you can also share items within your greedy book by clicking on the facebook, twitter or email icons on the item page.

is it possible to limit the people that see my greedy book?

definitely. the best way is to make the book private. you do this by clicking on the ‘settings’ button on the front of the book, where you can select private or public options. if you make a book private you can still share it with just the people you want to take a sneaky peak, but they will have to request to view the book. you can approve them through your ‘notifications’ page, which you access through the ‘my greedy account’ drop-down in the top right-hand corner of your screen.

do the people i share my greedy book with have to be members of the greedy book?

no they don’t. if you have shared your book with friends via email, facebook or twitter they will be able to view it even if they are not full members of the greedy book. any non-member can look at public greedy books and buy from them, and if they get stuck for ideas they can also see the inspirations section of the site but they can’t comment or see anything private, so get them to sign up too!

why can't I share my greedy book by email?

have you separated the email address with a comma? you’ll need to do that to successfully send an email. if you’re still having problems click here to contact us, we’ll get it fixed for you as soon as possible.

why can't i see someone's greedy book?

there could be a couple of reasons for this…

#1 their greedy book might be private, just click the ‘request to view’ link on the front of the greedy book and this will send them a request. once they’ve approved it you’ll be able to view their book.

# 2 have you searched for someone but can’t see the greedy book you’re looking for in the search results? look for a little plus sign under the books you can see and press it, this will expand the list and hopefully reveal the book you’re looking for!

#3 are you sure you’re looking at the correct person’s greedy account?

what do i do if two people have the same name and i'm not sure which is my friend?

we’re just developing proper profiles on the site as we speak, so everyone will be able to upload images which will help you identify the correct person. until then the best thing to do is to contact the person who’s greedy book you’re looking for and ask them to share it with you.
